Mark Clattenburg

Congratulations to England's Referees

Everybody at the Northumberland FA would like to congratulate English referees Mark Clattenburg, Simon Beck, Jake Collin, Anthony Taylor and Andre...
Clattenburg and his team have taken charge of three matches at Euro 2016, including Switzerland v Poland in the Round of 16 and the group games between Czech Republic and Croatia and Belgium’s clash with Italy.

And it rounds off a fine season for the County Durham-based official, who has refereed The Emirates FA Cup Final and the UEFA Champions League Final in recent months.

It also completes a strong two years for English officials on the international scene, with Clattenburg and Martin Atkinson now having officiated at all of UEFA’s major matches such as the Euro Final, Champions League final, Europa League final and UEFA Super Cup.

The FA Referees Committee Chairman David Elleray said: "The appointment of Mark, Simon, Jake, Andre and Anthony just a few weeks after they took charge of the UEFA Champions League final is an astonishing achievement and demonstrates the high quality of their performances in that final and in their three matches at Euro 2016.

"English football can be proud that not only were England the only country with two referee teams at Euro 2016, but that they have been appointed to some of the most important matches.

"Martin Atkinson controlled the Wales v Northern Ireland ‘British’ clash with great skill and now Mark’s team have the opportunity to contribute to what promises to be a very exciting and entertaining final.

"Few can dispute that in international refereeing terms, England is the number one country.

"This follows on from Howard Webb controlling the 2010 FIFA World Cup and Champions League finals. In addition, Marc Birkett refereed in the FIFA Futsal World Cup final in 2012 and Sian Massey officiated in the UEFA Women’s Champions League and Euro finals in 2013.

"One of the reasons that English referees are appointed to the world’s major finals is that they work as part of a very strong referee team - no referee can be successful without top quality assistants and, for UEFA competitions, additional assistant referees.

"In this respect Anthony Taylor has achieved a remarkable record of being the only additional assistant referee to have officiated in all of UEFA’s four major finals.

"I am sure everyone in football will wish Mark and his team every success on Sunday – I am sure they will perform in a way which enhances the final."
