Springbank managed a 3-2 win over Walker Jubilee on Sunday morning in the NFA Sunday Minor Cup.

Springbank opened the scoring on the 16th minute through Nathan Tilley which gave them a 1-0 advantage going into the break. The second half produced four more goals in an end-to-end battle with Benwell Springbank edging Walker Jubilee late in the game on the 74th minute to lift the cup.

Before the game on Sunday a minutes silence was held for Steven Vickers Jnr, son of Walker Jubilee player/manager Steven Vickers, who tragically passed away the week before the fixture.

The game started brightly in favour of Walker Central, who were maintaining a lot of the ball and creating early chances through Jonanthan Wright - his 25 yard strike whistling wide past the post.

Fortunes changed however on the 16th minute when defender Nathan Tilley headed in at the back post to put Springbank 1-0 up and change the tempo of the game.

But Walker Jubilee didn’t hold back as the team in white pushed for an equaliser. Jonathan Wright tested from distance through a 25 yard free kick and minutes later forced a remarkable save from Craig Gracie with a powerful low drive.

A curling free kick by Liam Wotherspoon could have stolen the show at Whitley Park. Wotherspoon held his head in his hands after striking inches wide of the top corner; a goal of the season contender for sure had it gone in. This led the teams into half-time with Benwell Springbank having the 1-0 advantage.

The second half began with a Walker Jubilee substitution - Vern Slade replacing Jonny Mann at 45 minutes. Slade had only been on the pitch for nine minutes when he poached Jonathan Wright’s rebounded effort, grabbing the all important equaliser for Jubilee.

Jonathan Wright was obviously thinking what he needed to do in order to score in this fixture as the forward had another chance from distance, but again was denied by ‘keeper Craig Gracie who will take the credit for keeping Springbank in this tie.

After a short spell of Springbank chances, they finally got their goal through Dean Lee who tapped into an open net following a Dom Shanley knock down from a cross; Springbank now in the driving seat with a 2-1 lead.

Late drama commenced when Waker Jubilee scored a fabulous header which lobbed the in-form Craig Gracie in the Springbank goal. The crowd were treated to some fantastic end-to-end football in this cup final at Whitley Park.

However, two minutes later, provider turned goal scorer when Dom Shanley used his pace to beat Jubilee keeper Joseph Buglass to the ball following a perfect through ball from midfield. Shanley slid in and poked the ball home in which would be the deciding goal in this well contested cup final.

Walker Jubilee finished runners up but can hold their heads high and be proud in knowing that they produced an amazing footballing spectacle.
