Blyth Town Juniors Barca lifted the 2017 Global Image Embroidery Girls U14 Cup on Tuesday evening, capping off a great run which saw them score fourteen goals in this year’s competition and only concede two in the process.

Blyth Town Barca kicked off in the cup final at Whitley Park after a minute’s silence in which both teams paid their respects to those who tragically lost their lives in the Manchester Arena attack on Monday.

Despite an early long range effort from Blyth, it was the team in yellow who had the better of the chances in the first few minutes; Rhiannon Holmes nearly producing a stunning goal when her powerful strike from the corner of the box flew just over the crossbar.

It was Blyth Town Barca who managed to take the lead however on 16 minutes in a very fortunate fashion. The Benfield centre-half made a mistake on the edge of the box and scored an own goal in the process.

After the first goal, the Blyth team seemed to lift in confidence as they nearly scored minutes later when Neeve Jamieson skied over from close range at the back post.

This chance, coupled with a great save from Benfield ‘keeper Hannah McGrady, left Blyth wondering what they had to do to get a second goal in the game.

The second goal eventually came just before half-time when an inch perfect ball over the top to Amber Lawless allowed the striker to round the ‘keeper and keep her composure to slot in to an open goal.

The early stages of the second-half were dominated by Blyth Town Barca as they scored their third goal on the 38th minute - Amber Lawless getting her second of the game with a powerful strike from an acute angle which beat Hannah McGrady at her near post.

There was a sign of a Benfield comeback just after the third goal when Holmes played through Emily Fife but Emily Aldcroft did well in the Blyth goal to come out and win the ball.

Despite being three goals up on 43 minutes, Blyth did not take their foot of the gas and rattled the crossbar following some great skill in midfield and a dipping strike by substitute Libby Corney.

Just a minute later it was 4-0, when Emily Land finished from close range following a well-worked goal involving Lawless and Burnip, who made it easy for Land to grab the fourth goal and put the tie beyond doubt.

Newcastle Benfield did well in the latter stages of the game, with Katie McNaught showing her dribbling ability in midfield by rounding two Blyth players before passing to her teammate up top who was eventually tackled.

Rihannon Holmes also tested from distance but her strike was not powerful enough to trouble Emily Aldcroft, who managed to see the game out in the dying stages and keep a clean-sheet for her team.

After the three minutes of added time, Blyth Town Barca were crowned champions in front of the many spectators at Whitley Park, lifting the Global Image Embroidery Girls U14’s Cup.
