50th Anniversary World Cup won by Wallsend Boys Club
16 teams competed in Northumberland FA’s 1966 50th Anniversary World Cup tournament on Saturday (30 July), which was won by Wallsend Boys Club...
The 11-a-side tournament to mark 50 years since England’s World Cup win in 1966, with the day raising over £600 for the Bobby Moore Fund. Prudhoe YC raised the most online donations, while Cramlington Green and New York raised the most on-the-day donations.
The tournament, which was hosted at Northumbria University’s Bullockstead Sports Ground, followed the makeup of the 1966 World Cup and then teams were split into separate knockout stages to compete for either a ‘Cup’ or ‘Shield’, depending on their place in the group stage.
Hazerligg Victory were the stars of the group stage, winning three from three. The quarter-finals saw an epic 12-11 penalty shootout, with Prudhoe YC getting the better of Heaton Stannington ‘A’. Another dramatic shootout took place in the semi-finals with the eventual winners, Wallsend Boys Club Seniors, defeating Marden Residents 5-4.
The four teams in the finals all came from Group B of the group-stage, with Broadwater FC meeting Amble Tavern in the ‘Shield’ final whilst Wallsend Boys club were up against Prudhoe Youth YC.
The Shield final was one to savour for Amble Tavern who defeated Broadwater FC 4-0 with a hat-trick from Brad McCelland, which secured him the Eusebio Golden Boot.
The Cup final was less straightforward, with the game going to penalties after a 1-1 draw between Wallsend Boys Club Seniors and Prudhoe YC. John Wyers put Wallsend in front before his goal was cancelled out by Prudhoe’s Graham Bell. Wallsend were victorious in the shootout and went on to lift their own World Cup.
