In a quite one sided affair at Whitley Park, North Shields Juniors came from a goal behind to beat Cramlington Juniors 5-1 on Tuesday 9 May. Led by goals from James Parker, Ross Guest (2), Regan Paterson and Callum Hewitson, North Shields Juniors secured the 2017 Sunday Junior Cup.

Early efforts from North Shields’ Jonathan Coulthard set the tone of the game as the team in red and black applied the pressure from the get go in the Sunday Junior Cup Final.

The attack produced what North Shields thought was the opening goal of the game when James Proctor whipped in a free kick from the left which found its way into the net. The celebrations were premature as referee Michael Gray pulled play back for a foul on Cramlington ‘keeper Matthew Leonard.

Following the disallowed goal, Cramlington took advantage of the frustrations of their opponents on the 21st minute. A cross from the right hand side was left by North Shields Juniors’ defenders and goalkeeper to allow Tom Wright to head into an open goal from a few yards out.

The goal seemed to be the wakeup call North Shields needed as they made a quick reply at the other end. Another James Proctor free kick met the head of defender James Parker, this time the goal stood and North Shields were right back in the game.

Another goal seemed imminent as Jordan Scarth tested the ‘keeper from distance with a 30 yard free-kick, coupled with another Jonathan Coulthard effort, this time slicing wide at the back post.

It looked like it wasn’t North Shields’ day after James Proctor hit the crossbar, but on the 41st minute they managed to break the deadlock from a through ball which made its way to Ross Guest - the striker slotting home a composed finish after being one on one with the goalkeeper.

The second half told much of the same story barring an early strike from Cramlington’s Christie Kidd, his 25 yard effort flying high and wide.

Regan Paterson made it 3-1 on the 55th minute with an inspired run from midfield taking on two Cramlington defenders before a spectacular strike from the edge of the box whistled into the bottom corner leaving the ‘keeper with no chance.

Cramlington spent most of the second half on the back foot and couldn’t manage to get much of the possession as North Shields pushed on for a 4th goal 10 minutes later, this time Callum Hewitson smashing into the roof of the net after latching onto a save from the Cramlington goalkeeper.

Cramlington had a spell of good chances in the final third of the game, Christie Kidd playing the role of architect and helping his team regain some possession.

However, his efforts proved to no avail when Regan Paterson’s lovely first touch and through ball fell to strike partner Ross Guest on the 82nd minute. A great goal to watch as Guest confidently dinked the goalkeeper and got his second of the game.

Cramlington managed to stop a sixth goal and see the game out as the whistle blew and North Shields Juniors U18 were crowned 2017 Sunday Junior Cup winners.
