Northumberland FA v North Riding FA - match report

Looking to banish the disappointment of the FA Cup defeat 2 weeks ago the young Northumbrians had 6 changes to the match day squad.

Starting line-up: Josh Wilson, Matty Wade, Logan Fawcett, Michael Woods, Adam Beattie, Josh Skivington, Scott Shepherd, Will Morris, Will Jenkins, Harry Newton, Jackson Ward.

Subs: Lewis Lant, Thom White, Joe Bell, Antonio Agostinho, Cameron Gascoigne

After a slow start to the game North Riding took the lead on 8 minutes after the centre forward latched onto a pass in behind the defence and lobbed Wilson from the edge of the box.

Both sides created chances after the opening goal and Northumberland levelled on 16 minutes with Harry Newton using his pace to get onto a Jenkins through ball before sliding it into the corner of the goal.

Northumberland started to assert their dominance for the rest of the half but were frustrated by some last ditch defending from the visitors stubborn defence and the teams went into half time locked at 1-1.

Two changes at the start of the second half saw Cameron Gascoigne make his debut to replace Josh Skivington and Antonio Agostinho replace the injured Jackson Ward.

Northumberland started the half on top and after 50 minutes fine work from Wade and Morris saw the pair combine and Morris put the home side into the lead.

On 60 minutes Joe Bell replaced Shepherd and Skivington replaced Newton – Skivingtons first touch was to set up Morris for his second goal to put the Northumbrians 3-1 ahead.

Lewis Lant entered the fray on 68 minutes replacing Adam Beattie.

71 minutes and some great combination play then saw Gascoigne provide for Jenkins to make it 4-1 and the visitors were struggling to deal with the fast attacking play of Northumberland.

4 minutes later some great play by Agostinho saw his effort rebound off the woodwork and deflected into his own goal by a North Riding defender, two minutes after that one Agostinho got his goal after good work by Skivington with Northumberland looking to pile on the pressure.

78 minutes – White replaced Wilson.

After 81 minutes good work by Jenkins set Agostinho away to grab his second goal of the game and 2 minutes later the pair combined again for Agostinho to complete his hattrick.

Shepherd, Beattie and Newton then replaced Jenkins, Wade and Morris for the last 7 minutes.

Despite the scoreline Northumberland continued to press and Agostinho scored his 4th of the match and Northumberlands 9th in the 90th minute after some great wing play from Newton.

Final score – Northumberland 9-1 North Riding.

A fantastic performance from all 16 players in the squad and a great way to look forward to the trip to East Riding on February 8th.
