On 23rd May 2024, Northumberland FA held its first SEN Football Festival with pupils from Benton Dene Primary School, The Dales (Ashdale), The Dales (Blythdale) and Walkergate Community School taking part in a fun morning of football.
The football festival provided an opportunity for children to play 6v6 football at Cochrane Park, as well as provide pupils with football boots and shin guards to help them continue their football journey in the future within school and with our grassroots clubs. Football boots were donated by Northumberland FA with Kitlocker kindly donating shin guards for the day. In total 4 schools and 28 pupils took part in the morning, playing 2 games of football refereed by affiliated referees from Northumberland FA’s Voice FC group.
Feedback from the day has been positive.
“I liked having the special boots to wear.” - Benton Dene Primary School student.
“Well organised, fun for the children.” - The Dales, Blythdale.
Inclusion Development Officer Chris Kilburn said, “It was a great morning to see the schools come together to take part in a special moment for the County hosting its first SEN Football Festival. To have people coming together to support the morning was fantastic, a huge thank you to Kitlocker for donating the Shin Guards, Dean Buckle and Lewis White for sorting through the boots, Helen Beales for helping the students and teachers find the correct boots on the day and David Jones for organising the referees from Voice FC. A good team effort."
“To see how much fun the children had on the day was amazing. It’s important to keep building relationships with our schools alongside our community clubs, to raise awareness that there are opportunities within grassroots football for disability football. I can’t thank the schools enough for taking the time to come along and playing football with us.”
After the event details were shared with the schools on where their nearest FA Comets session could be found. FA Comets is a turn up and play pan-disability recreational football session for children 7-11 and 12-16. They are a welcoming environment for children who may not already be playing mainstream football to access football within grassroots, where they can learn skills and make friends.
Plans are already in development for the next SEN Football Festival in October 2024, followed by a third in May 2025, with skill sessions, penalty shootouts and football matches.
